[ compare ] PostgresRun vs Supabase

Just the Postgres.
None of the platform tax.

Supabase is an excellent all-in-one backend; if you mainly want fast, cheap, dedicated managed Postgres without the platform, here's how we compare.

[01] the short version

Platform vs pure Postgres.

Supabase bundles Postgres with auth, storage, realtime, edge functions and instant APIs — great if you want the whole platform, and priced and usage-metered to match. That's a real product, and for a lot of teams it's exactly right.

PostgresRun is focused purely on Postgres: local NVMe, dedicated CPU on Pro+, included PITR and pooling, expert tuning, and $62/mo for the comparable 8 GB box with predictable pricing. No usage meters, no platform — just a fast, well-run PostgreSQL 17 database.

[03] what you gain

Beyond the price tag.

NVMe + dedicated CPU

Local NVMe and dedicated CPU on Pro+ mean higher IOPS and lower, more predictable query latency for your real workload.

Predictable pricing

One flat monthly price per database. No usage meters, egress surprises or add-ons creeping onto next month's bill.

When Supabase might fit better

We'd rather you pick the right tool. Supabase can be the better call when:

  • You want the full integrated backend — auth, realtime, storage, edge functions and auto-generated APIs — in one product.
  • You're early and value the all-in-one developer experience over squeezing the database bill.
  • You lean on Studio plus instant REST and GraphQL to ship without writing a backend.

If that's you, Supabase is a genuinely good choice. If you mainly need the database, you're paying for more than you use.

[04] questions

Switching from Supabase.

Will my app need code changes?
No. It's standard PostgreSQL — you swap the connection string and you're done. Any driver, ORM or framework that talks to Supabase's database works here.
Can I keep Supabase Auth?
Yes. You can keep using Supabase Auth (and storage, realtime or edge functions) against your data, or run both side by side during the migration and move at your own pace.
Do you do realtime or edge functions?
No — we focus on running Postgres extremely well. Pair us with your existing stack, or keep Supabase's platform features pointed at the database we host. Ask us if you're unsure.
How much downtime does the migration take?
Usually minutes. We replicate your data ahead of time and cut over in a short window we schedule with you. Large or write-heavy databases get a tailored plan.
